Orange defeats Milford in U12 District softball

The Milford Softball 12U team hit well when bat struck ball in its District IV tournament opener with Orange Softball at Foran High on June 28. Unfortunately for Milford, Orange pitcher Lauren Wasikowski struck out 15 batters in leading her team to a 3-1 victory.

Both squads will play East Haven and North Branford to finish the round-robin format. The championship game is scheduled for Friday.

Milford finished the game with four hits and worked out three walks. It took the lead in the top of the third inning.

Orange, which had five hits and one walk, tied it in the bottom of the frame and scored two runs in the fourth.

Morgan Viesselman reached on a bunt single with one out in the Milford first. Mary Grace Weissauer walked and stolen bases put both runners in scoring position before Daelyn Boscarino turned Kailey Smith’s grounder to the right side into the the third out.

Sophia Swift had Orange’s first hit, a single in the bottom of the second. Milford shortstop Tori Lanese short-circuited the rally with a diving catch on Abby Eschweiler’s liner.

Katherine Mao walked in Milford’s second at bat. She stole two bases only to be stranded at third, as Wasikowski put all three outs in the book on strikes.

In the Orange second, Ann Varkolak reached base only to be thrown out stealing by Sarah Paulus.

The scoreless dance came to an end in the third.

Viesselman walked with one out and Weissauer singled sharply to left. Lanese hit the ball to shortstop. The fielder’s choice try to second was late and Viesselman beat the throw home.

Wasikowski struck out the next two batters.

Maya Manzione led off the Orange third with a single. She rounded the bases on a pair of infield outs.

Milford’s Marissa Turner walked with one out in the fourth. She made it to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch around a pair of strikeouts. Turner advanced no further, as Wasikowski made a good play on Lucia Pino’s chopper.

Victoria McNelis singled over third base with one out in the home fourth.

Boscarino ripped a long RBI double to right center to give Orange the lead. She scored to make it 3-1 on Nicole Pulie’s RBI grounder.

Milford rallied in the fifth on one-out  infield singles by Weissauer and Lanese. They moved up a base on a wild pitch, but Wasikowski caught the next two batters looking at strike three.

Orange had a chance to stretch its lead in the fifth.

Sara Schultz walked and Juliette Zito doubled, when the ball was lost in the sun. Smith recovered on the play and hit Viesselman with the cutoff. Paulus took the relay and tagged Schultz out at the plate.. Viesselman then posted her first strikeout to leave Zito on third.

Wasikowski struck out the side in the sixth.

Jenna Cichowski, Morgan Viesselman, Mary Grace Weissauer, Marissa Turner, Courtney Hanson, Tori Lanese, Lucia Pino, Ava Candido, Katherine Mao, Sara Connelly, Sarah Paulus and Kailey Smith make up the Milford All-Star team.
