The Milford National Lou Gehrig Little League 12U All Stars defeated West Haven, 16-11, to earn the District 4 title and a berth in the Sectional Tournament beginning on Tuesday in Trumbull.

Milford National will play play Stamford North at 5:45 p.m. at Unity Park in the first-game of the round robin format.

Fairfield American plays Milford on Wednesday at 5:45 them takes on Stamford Thursday.

The top two teams play for the title on Friday at 7 p.m.

“This team I’ve been with them since they were ten years old,” said Milford National manager Mark Lombardi, who is assisted by Mike Wywoda and Ben Dunn. “I told them when we first started this thing that we might have a shot at winning the districts.  I said we’ll take it one game at a time, but I think I see enough talent to do this. They just had to believe in themselves.”

West Haven led 1-0 after one inning and 5-3 after two, but couldn’t keep pace.

Milford National, who went 8-0 in the districts, finished the game with 19 hits.

Nathan Haase and Brian Felag each hit a two-run home run in an 11 run third-inning uprising. Leadoff hitter Mark Lombardi had five hits, three triples and a pair of doubles.

“These kids ask me to throw batting practice to them every day for the last three weeks,” the Milford National manager said. “I don’t think I have a ligament in my arm left. They are good hitters. They listen. They are disciplined at the plate. They don’t try to do more than what the pitch allows them to do.”

Justin Judge helped bring Milford back from a 1-0 deficit when he led off the second with a double.Jaden Wywoda singled him home and he scored on a two-bagger to right by Felag. After a wild pitch, Haase plated Felag with a sacrifice fly.

West Haven’s Dylan Supan hit a three-run home run and Tyler Jones had an RBI single in the home second.

Milford sent 14 batters to the plate in the third. Jack Phelan had two singles and Judge two doubles.

Following Haase’s two-run home run that gave Milford a 6-5 lead, Derek Ouelette restarted the rally with a single. Lombardi doubled pinch runner Tyler Tortora home and Zach Werthman singled to put runners on the corners.

Matt Dunn singled two runs in with a shot inside the first base bag. After Judge hit an RBI double and Jaden Wywoda an RBI single before Felag’s two-run blast.

Judge got the start and the win on the mound after leaving with a 16-5 lead after three innings Haase pitched the fourth and Werthman the last two frames.

West Haven scored two runs in the fourth, including a home run by Greg Baker, to extend the game (10 run rule). It had four runs across  in the fifth before Werthman at second base made a great play.

“You saw West Haven put up a battle,” Manager Lombardi said. “They were down ten and they just weren’t going to give up.They’re just like us, if we were down ten we’d be fighting for it. This is what we wanted let the kids have a good battle on the field.”
