Knights’ 8th graders cop Fairfield County crown
The Milford Knights 8th grade boys basketball team completed an amazing season by defeating Waterbury by a score of 68-60 in the Fairfield County Basketball League championship game at Weston High School on March 5.
This capped off an undefeated Fairfield County League season and the four-game playoff sweep included close wins against Madison, Bridgeport, Wilton and Waterbury.
Milford jumped out to a commanding first quarter lead. Thanks in large part to a strong press, the Knights were able to attack the basket right from the opening tip. Early offense was led by Shymar Robinson, Jon Vitale, Andrew Janik and Will Diamantis.
Leading by 15 points at the half, it appeared as if Milford had an easy game on its hands but that was not the case. Waterbury went on a third quarter run, based in large part by a three-point explosion, and was able to cut the lead down to two points deep into the final period.
Milford had answers with some great ball control by Declan McGinley and John Shannon, and a pair of three-point baskets by Calvin Boyd, and the Knights were able to pull away in the fourth.
When Milford needed to, it controlled the tempo of the game and were disciplined with their shot selection down the stretch.
The team, all year, has received strong contributions from all players. The outstanding defensive efforts of Will Phelan, Zach Merchant, Antonio Brown and Mikey Becker on Saturday symbolize what the Knights focus on, which is being strong defensively.
The coaches Mike Merchant, Mike Shannon, and George Diamantis could not be prouder of the boys for their work ethic all season and their passion to win
The Knights (36-4 overall) are still competing in the St Mark’s Tournament and the Milford HoopFest Tournament.
