Golden Thunder win tourney opener

Milford’s Golden Thunder came away with a decisive 11-3 opening-round victory over Beth-Wood in an East Division match up of the 8U Beth-Wood Tournament played at John Francis Field on June 26.

Leading the offense for Milford was Declan Wywoda, Jackson Gryzwacz, Alex Rodriguez, Steven Witteman, Cal Wrigley, Ryan Giambra and Ben Britton.

Milford jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning and padded its advantage throughout.

Beth-Wood (Bethany, Woodbridge) began to heat up in the fourth inning and was able to string together some offense, aided by a towering triple to cut the lead to 7-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The bottom half of the Milford batting order was clutch, however, as Jack Thomas, William LeCuyer, Luis Lozada, Justin Gentallan, Andre Peterson, Matthew Stevens and Matthew Galligan and Jake Stash got the job done.

Aside from the fourth inning where Milford committed a few miscues allowing Beth-Wood to plate the three unearned runs, Milford played solid defense.

Offensive standouts were Wywoda (double, triple) and Giambra (double, single) and defensively Milford was led by Stash and Thomas.

Milford, sponsored by Papas Pizza, Total Lawn Care and More LLC and Napoli Deli, is in action again  today at 6 when they play at New Britain’s Martha Hart Park on 135 Corbin Avenue.
