Baseball: Foran takes down Hamden

Dylan Bartel pitched a complete-game eight-hitter to lead Foran High to an 8-1 victory over Hamden High on Friday afternoon in an SCC interdivision matchup.

Foran improved to 7-10 overall and needs to win one of its final three contests to qualify for the Class L state tournament. Hamden dropped to 7-10.

The Lions got the ball rolling in the top of the first, with Josh Mixie singling and scoring on an errant throw to second base on a double-steal attempt. Bryan Firmender then slugged a two-out RBI double to provide Bartel with the only run support he needed.

In the second, Colin Firmender reached on an error that drove in R.J. Balado, who doubled off the fence to leadoff the frame. Colin Firmender then came around to score on the third Hamden error of the first two innings in front of starter Patrick Alexander, making it 4-0.

Mixie's run-scoring triple pushed the Lion lead to 5-0 after three, before R.J. Jackson's RBI single, Bryan Firmender's sacrifice fly and Mike Howell's RBI double extended the margin to 8-0 midway through the sixth.

Ron Grant's run-scoring double drove in Marc Masciantonio in the bottom of the sixth inning to break up Bartel's shutout bid, but the right-hander worked around an infield hit and an error in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the complete-game win — his first in his first start of the year.

Mixie and Nick Tuzzolo had two hits apiece to pace Foran's 10-hit offensive attack — which also produced seven bases on balls, three from Bartel.

The Lions travel to Wallingford to take on Sheehan High (14-4) on Monday night at 7 p.m. before closing out the regular season with games on Wednesday at Ken Walker Field against Wilbur Cross of New Haven (3-12) at West Haven High (6-10) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Piurek Field.
