The Dogs corral Milford Men’s Recreation League softball title
A six-run fifth-inning outburst powered The Dogs to an 11-1 win over 7 Seas/Junga Electric/All Phase H&C in the Milford Men’s Recreation League softball final at Washington Field on Monday night.
Scott Furtado’s sacrifice fly drove in Matt DiGioia with the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth, extending The Dogs’ lead to 11-1 and invoking the mercy rule.
The Dogs capitalized on three errors by 7 Seas/Junga/All Phase in the inning. Brian Hildebrandt, who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, punched a two-run double to right field, before Mike Hough tripled to make it 8-1.
After consecutive errors, DiGioia reached on fielder’s choice and Dave Burrows notched an RBI single to push The Dog margin to 10-1.
With the winning run at third, 7 Seas/Junga/All Phase elected to intentionally walk Anthony Lazzara to set up a force at every base.
Furtado, who won the game on the mound for The Dogs, lifted Tom Cadigan’s next pitch to the outfield to plate the decisive run.
7 Seas/Junga/All Phase, the No. 7 overall seed playing out of the Wednesday Night Division, scored its lone run in the top of the first.
Paul Mirmina and Rob Aquilino walked, before Cadigan slapped a two-out single. Alex Makin’s RBI single got 7 Seas/Junga/All Phase on the scoreboard, but Furtado surrendered just two singles the rest of the way.
The Dogs pulled level at 1 in the bottom of the second, with George Anastasiou drawing a lead-off walk and scoring on a fielder’s choice by Joe Ezzo.
An RBI groundout by Tom Behrendt and Hildebrandt’s two-out run-scoring single gave The Dogs the lead for good in the bottom of the third.
Run-scoring singles from Burrows and Lazzara extended the advantage to 5-1 through four innings, before the six-run fifth provided the exclamation point.
Furtado retired nine batters in a row at one point and helped himself with two hits at the plate. Burrows added three hits and Chris Peloso and Anastasiou chipped in with two base hits apiece.
The Dogs, seeded fourth overall and representing the Monday Division, defeated last year’s champions, Pitstop Seadogs, in the quarterfinals, before vanquishing previously-unbeaten Burns Insurance, the top seed, in the semifinals.
7 Seas/Junga/All Phase advanced to the final after toppling sixth-seeded Partagas Investments, 28-13, in the second semifinal.
