Post 196 defeats West Haven
Coach Cliff Bugyi’s Milford Post 196 American Legion baseball team looked like a championship-quality team, trouncing West Haven Post 70 by a score of 11-1 on Thursday night.
Jake Saley out of Jonathan Law took the mound for Milford and tossed a complete game. He allowed one run and six hits while walking only two.
West Haven had a pair of two-out singles in the top of the first, but Saley induced a ground ball to get out of the inning and the game remained scoreless.
After an uneventful top of the second, Milford jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the frame.
A pair of Foran High teammates, catcher Joe Zanghi and first baseman Shawn Cariglio, led off the inning with back-to-back singles before Saley drew a walk to load up the bases.
Matt Ferraiolo, batting in the eighth spot, knocked in Zanghi with a single, keeping the bases loaded.
Nick Pinto drew a walk to force in Cariglio and take the score to 2-0, before the Westies turned a double play.
Post 196’s bats were back at it in the bottom of the third.
Ed Michaud lined a one-out single and Zanghi walked before Cariglio singled Michaud home.
Saley followed with a single to center, but Zanghi pressed his luck and tried to score from second only to be gunned down by a strong throw.
Milford reloaded the bases with two outs on a single by Christian Baglini, but Cariglio was thrown out trying to take home on a passed ball.
The locals persisted in the fourth and stretched the score to 5-0, on singles by Ferraiola and Pinto, a passed ball, and a clutch double by Kyle Winters.
Winters was at second base when Michaud lifted a fly ball to center. He tagged up and headed for third after the catch was made, but West Haven contended that Winters had left early, and the umpires upheld that claim, declaring Winters out and ending the inning.
Saley continued to be lights-out against West Haven, keeping Post 70 off the board for two more innings, including a 1-2-3 sixth frame.
Milford’s bats exploded in the bottom of the sixth, batting around and producing six more runs to take the score to 11-0.
Baglini walked and Pinto was hit by a pitch before Sean Cameron singled to load the bases.
Winters hit a sharp grounder to third and the throw home was low and bounced over the catcher’s head as Baglini scored and the speedy Pinto followed him across the plate.
With runners on second and third and still only one out, Michaud drew a walk to load up the bases.
Zanghi kept the rally going with a single to left, scoring Cameron and keeping the bases loaded.
Batting in the five spot, Cariglio stepped to the plate and hammered a two-run double to the fence in right-center, scoring Michaud and Zanghi and stretching Milford’s lead to 10-0.
Post 196 scored their final run of the game on a sharp grounder off the bat of Saley, who drove in Cariglio’s pinch runner, Nolan Rourke.
Saley took the mound to finish off his complete game, and ran into some turbulence in the seventh inning.
After a leadoff double by Post 70’s J.C. Wilmington, a single by Wes Gambardella and a throwing error put runners on second and third.
A walk by Eric Flores loaded up the bases, before No. 7 hitter Dan Chambrelli lined a single up the middle to score Wilmington.
Gambardella was thrown out by Pinto trying to score West Haven’s second run on the play.
Saley earned a strikeout and induced a ground ball to end the threat and seal the deal on Milford’s victory.
