The third time was definitely not a charm for the No 8 seed Foran High softball team on Wednesday afternoon, as the Lions dropped a 7-1 Southern Connecticut Conference quarterfinal play-off round game to top-seed Cheshire.

It was the third time this season that the Rams, now with a 20-1 record and heading for a semifinal round showdown on Thursday night against Amity Regional, have beaten Foran.

Cheshire took a 12-4 decision at home back on April 24 and shut the Lions out, 7-0, on May 18 in Milford.

Playing on the road, Foran gave up three first-inning runs and four more in the fifth in seeing its record drop to 11-10.

Foran scored its run in the second on Kayla Gosselin’s RBI sacrifice fly to center, which scored Alex Ives, who had singled, went to second and was sacrificed over to third.

The Lions managed only four hits off of Cheshire starting and winning pitcher Mackenzie Juodaitis, who struck out eight and walked only one.

Gosselin, Ashley Mendillo and Jenna Zacarrelli had Foran’s other hits.

Abigail Abramson and Jill Pulek had two hits each for the Rams, and Samantha Simione drove in two runs with a double to left in the fifth.
“They’re a complete team,” said Foran head coach Jeff Bevino. “There’s nothing that they can’t do. Teams are going to have to go out there and beat them, because they’re not going to beat themselves.

“Defensively, they robbed us of at least four other hits with great plays, especially early in the game. Then, they came up and hit the ball hard against us.”
