STAMFORD — Going into its bye week at 1-3 was a bitter pill for Trinity Catholic to swallow, but the Crusaders definitely looked like a much better team than their record would suggest when they made their triumphant return to Gaglio Field Saturday afternoon against Ridgefield. Fifteen days since their last game, the Crusaders unloaded a season’s worth of frustration on Ridgefield, holding off the Tigers for a 38-33 victory. “We were tired of being 1-3,” said Trinity running back Jonmichael Bivona, who scored three touchdowns. “We knew coming into this game that it was going to be a physical game. We practiced all week how to play physical. ‘Man up’ was our motto all week, and that’s what we did.” Trinity looked to be in total control when Bivona scored on an eight-yard jet sweep for a 38-14 lead less than a minute into the fourth quarter. “Coach challenged us during the week,” Trinity quarterback Nick Granata said. “He told us ‘man up’ and the entire senior class got called out and told to do a better job. That’s what we did today.” Chasing 24 points in the fourth quarter, Ridgefield came roaring back with an aerial attack that suddenly caught fire after struggling for most of the day. Ridgefield quarterback Greg Gatto scored on a 5-yard keeper to cut Trinity’s lead to 38-20, then found Shane Palmer for a 6-yard score on the Tigers’ next drive, ttrimming the deficit to 38-26. Both touchdowns were followed by unsuccessful two-point tries. “We came out and executed against a very good football team,” Trinity coach Donny Panapada said. “It got a little scary there at the end. That’s not the way you want to draw it up, but we did a lot of good things.” After the teams traded turnovers on downs, Ridgefield again moved the ball into Trinity territory and capped off its scoring drive when Collin Lowe leaped into the air and came down a jump ball in the end zone, pulling his team to within 38-33 with 49 seconds left. Ridgefield attempted a longer version of the onside kick, pooching the ball down the field where Trinity recovered to seal the win. “You can’t come in here against that team and not play well and expect to win,” Ridgefield coach Kevin Callahan said. “We deserved to come up short there. We didn’t deserve to get lucky on that because we were outplayed today.” Ridgefield’s first drive of the afternoon was highlighted by Chris Longo’s outstanding one-handed grab over the middle that went for 24 yards and set up Gatto to score on a 1-yard keeper for the early 7-0 lead. With Trinity up 10-7 and on defense early in the second quarter, Chris Ciacciarella was Johnny on the spot for the Crusaders. The junior linebacker bolted into the backfield and snared a bobbled Ridgefield handoff out of the air before racing 52 yards for the score and a 17-7 advantage. “You can’t give a team three personal fouls on a drive and let them get a field goal and then give up a touchdown when you put the ball on the ground in your own backfield,” Callahan said. “Those are 10 points that we just gave away and that’s the margin of victory.” The Crusaders also got an outstanding effort from defensive back Willie Sadler, who broke up four passes, many of which were in single coverage and deep down the field. “They took some stuff away, but we were able to execute at a high level and hold on for the win,” Panapada said. The most important thing is we got a W today.” firstname.lastname@example.org; Twitter: @jchik17 TRINITY CATHOLIC 38, RIDGEFIELD 33 RIDGEFIELD 7 7 0 19—33 TRINITY CATHOLIC 3 21 7 7—38 R—Greg Gatto 1 run (Petros Papadopoulos kick) TC—David Broncati 21 field goal TC—Dominick Svrcek 4 pass from Nick Granata (Broncati kick) TC—Chris Ciacciarella 52 fumble return (Broncati kick) R—Gatto 6 run (Papadopoulos kick) TC—Nick Melia 5 run (Broncati kick) TC—Jonmichael Bivona 24 pass from Granata (Broncati kick) TC—Bivona 8 run (Broncati kick) R—Gatto 3 run (pass failed) R—Shane Palmer 6 pass from Gatto (pass failed) R—Collin Lowe 25 pass from Gatto (Papadopoulos kick) Records: Ridgefield 3-2; Trinity Catholic 2-3.
