The Foran High boys lacrosse team maintained its perfect start to the spring campaign by routing West Haven High, 13-3, on April 19, at the Vito DeVito Sports Complex. After a methodical first quarter resulted in a 3-1 Lions’ edge, they erupted with a six unanswered goals to take a 9-2 halftime lead. “I thought we were a little sloppy offensively in the first quarter,” Foran coach Brian Adkins said. “I thought in the second quarter, we had a nice quarter. We exploded offensively. We cleaned up the turnovers and were able to finish.” Paul Mirmina and Will Vitelli paced Foran with three goals apiece. Alex Eager and Zach White added two markers apiece. Drew Perani, Jonathan DePascale and David McLenithan chipped in with single tallies. Eager notched three assists. Perani and DePascale had two each. Mirmina and White also assisted on goals. Josh Teller (six saves) and Gabe Scott (two saves) combined on the victory in the cage. “Our style is we want to up and down the field, run as much as we can and get the ball into the back of the net,” said Adkins said, whose side held a 40-21 shot advantage.” Foran grabbed a 2-0 margin after Mirmina collected a pass from the corner and beat Westies’ goaltender Jim Bruneau at the eight-minute mark of the first. West Haven capitalized on a Lion turnover at 5:30, with John Christensen finding the back of the net. Mirmina’s goal at 4:59 made it 3-1, before Bruneau made a quality save on Andrew Jones’ shot. White’s wraparound marker at 11:29 of the second quarter ignited the six-goal uprising that gave the Lions control of the game for good. Mirmina, Vitelli, McLenithan and Perani rattled off goals to make it 9-1 with 1:34 left in the half. Justin Tuschhoff scored with 17.2 seconds left to halt the run for West Haven (0-4), but it was all Lions the rest of the way. Eager fought off a hit from a Blue Devil defender to score a sprawling goal at 7:25 of the third and Eager and DePascale cashed in man-advantage goals after a penalty on West Haven’s Matt Maio. With a trio of 6-2 defenders in Andrew Paskiewicz, Anthony Kopatch and Andy Kohn, along with 6-5 Bob Notholt, the Lions snuffed out West Haven foray’s into the attacking zone. The Blue Devils’ Austin Kozak closed out the scoring with a tally with 3:32 left to play to put the final scoreline at 13-3. It was a much-needed victory for the Lions in their quest to qualify for the Class M state tournament. “We knew we had to get off to a hot start,” Adkins said. “We finished 6-10 last year, a game short of making states. Our whole goal is to make sure we get that seventh win. “Last year, we split with West Haven and that kept us out of the state tournament. We were happy to make sure with we picked up a ‘W’ here. Four more to go.” Foran traveled to Shelton High (2-2) on Tuesday night, kicking off a stretch of five games in nine days that includes a home game against Notre Dame of West Haven (1-4) on Friday and road contests at Sheehan High of Wallingford (3-2), Branford (1-4) and Lyman Hall of Wallingford (2-3).
