Manager Cliff Bugyi’s Milford Post 196 American Legion baseball team improved to 8-5 with a doubleheader sweep of Ansonia Post 50 at Nolan Field on June 25. Post 196 took the first game by a score of 6-1 and returned for a 7-0 victory in the late game. “We had two well-pitched games tonight and we played some sound defense, which has improved,” Bugyi said of his squad. “We’ve had kind of an up and down year; hopefully these games will get us going.” Rising Jonathan Law senior Evan Carolla (3-1) took the mound for Milford in the first game, throwing a complete game and allowing a single run and three hits while striking out three. Mack Taylor drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the game, advancing to second and then third on wild pitches, before Reinaldo Jackson and Mike Bevino worked back-to-back bases on balls to load the bases for Matt Montano. Montano flew out to center field and Taylor tagged and scored, giving Post 196 the lead. Jackson led off the third with a walk, moving to second on a single by Montano and third on a fielder’s choice by Ryan Muir. He scored on a single by Nick Tuozzola, extending Milford’s lead to 2-0. Ansonia chipped away in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run on a single, a walk, and a fielder’s choice, but Carolla held them to that run and allowed only one more baserunner the rest of the game. Leading 2-1, Post 196 added to their lead with a single run in the top of the fourth. Taylor singled and stole second and was almost left standing on second base, but Jackson knocked a single to drive in his teammate and take the score to 3-1. Milford wasn’t done yet, though. Muir led off the top of the seventh with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. He was driven in when Tuozzola pounded a hard-hit double. Justin Lanese drew a walk, and Thomas Marchitto dunked a single to shallow left center to score Tuozzola.Taylor walked to load the bases, and Marchitto scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Jackson. Carolla finished off Post 50 in the top of the seventh, wrapping up the night’s first game. Recent Foran graduate Matt Alicki was stellar on the mound in the second game of the twin bill, tossing six innings and allowing only one hit. Nine Ansonia batters went down swinging, including a spectacular sequence of six consecutive strikeouts by Alicki from the third to fifth innings. He was relieved by Montano, who faced only three batters to wrap up the final inning. Post 196 wasted no time scoring four runs in the top of the first. Centerfielder Cheech Giustino, Milford’s only starting postgraduate, who graduated from Jonathan Law and now attends UConn, singled with one out and advanced to second on a grounder to first by the next batter. Bevino drew a walk to put runners on first and second, and Montano got the job done with a single to drive in the pair and put Milford on the board. Muir and Tuozzola kept the rally going with back-to-back singles, bringing in two more runs and extending Post 196’s lead to 4-0. Alicki kept Post 50’s offense quiet for the most part. He loaded the bases in the third inning on a trio of walks spread over five batters, but worked his way out of the jam with a strikeout.Milford tacked on another run in the top of the four h when Lanese reached base on an infield error with two outs. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Carolla, extending the lead to 5-0. Bevino led off the top of the fifth with a single, moving to second on a fielder’s choice by Montano. He advanced to third when Muir reached on an error, before scoring on a wild pitch. For good measure, Milford added one last run in the top of the sixth when Giustino reached base and scored on a fielder’s choice, taking the score to 7-0. With the win, Alicki improved his record to 2-1. Milford regressed to 8-8 with losses to Orange over the weekend. Post 196 is home to Shelton (7-4) today with first pitch at Foran High at 5:45.
