Wrestling: Brocksom leads Lawmen at states
Kevin Brocksom from Jonathan Law placed sixth at 220 pounds at the Class M wrestling championships in Guilford on Feb. 20.
The Lawmen placed 15th in the 27-team field. Foran High won the title, followed by Ledyard, New Fairfield and Ellis Tech.
Brocksom, a sophomore, has earned a spot in next weekend’s State Open in New Haven.
Also earning team points for coach Matt Schoonmaker’s Lawmen were Troy Anderson (106 pounds), Shayne McCourt (113), Jordan Beck (132), Matt Grace (145), Dan Ouelette (152), Kris Osornio (160), Cole Egersheim (170), Ronnie Spangler (182) and Ireoluwa Opayemi (heavyweight).
A freshman, Anderson was seeded fifth and opened with a pin in 3:27. Eventual fourth-place finisher Dan Veleas of Berlin dropped Anderson intop consolations with a 7-1 decision. He stayed alive with a pin in 1:16 before losing by fall to Ledyard’s third-place finisher Bo Nguyen.
McCourt, a freshman, was seeded 20th and advanced with a pin in 1:36. After a loss to fourth-place finisher Ev Minevich from East Lyme, McCourt won a 6-3 decision before being ousted by fall.
A senior, Beck was seeded 12th. Dropped into wrestlebacks via a 10-8 decision, he advanced with an 8-5 decision before losing to Berlin’s sixth-place finisher Josh Veleas.
Grace was seeded 16th and won his first bout by fall in 34 seconds. After losing to eventual champion Michael Ross from Foran High, the junior split falls winning in 2:12 then losing to fifth-place finisher McKay LaRose from Guilford.
Ouelette, a senior, was seeded fourth. Knocked into the consolation round 9-8 by fifth-place finisher from Ledyard Jacob Millbach, Ouelette stayed alive with a pin in 41 seconds. He then lost by first-period fall.
Osornio, a junior, was the eighth seed. Knocked into wrestlebacks 13-4, Osornio won by 1:42 pin before losing 6-1 to sixth-place finisher from Bethel Max Khashabo.
Egersheim was seeded seventh and the sophomore advanced with a 14-4 major decision, before losing to runner-up Qasim Khan from Foran by third period fall. Egersheim split his consolation matches, winning 12-7 and then losing to sixth-place finisher Ruiz Sandoval from Woodstock Academy.
Spangler, a sophomore, was the 17th seed and advanced with a 5-1 win before losing to eventual champion Mitchell LaFlam from Lyman Memorial. In wrestlebacks, Spangler lost by fall to ninth-seeded Colby Stuart from Foran.
