Witte delivers in clutch

Foran High’s Jubilee Witte enjoyed the bus ride home from the Lions’ wrestling match at Branford High more than any other of coach Frank Peters’ grapplers.

A freshman, Witte took the mat for his SCC match-ending  120-pound bout with the Hornets’ Adam Gallagher with his team trailing 33-32.

Whit scored an escape and held on for a 1-0 decision over the junior to lift Foran (15-6) to victory.

Branford (6-3, 1-1 SCCß) won the first two weight classes for a 9-0 lead before the Lions’ C.J. Luth scored a pin in 2:49 at 138 pounds.

Clay Callahan answered a Hornet pin with a 16-0 win by technical fall at 152 and Beau Garcia had a 7-1 decision at 160 to bring the Lions with 18-15.

Foran won three more classes to take a 27-12 lead, after Wasim Khan (2:54 pin), Zach Hubler (10-3 decision) and Ben Croll (4-1 decision) were victorious at 170, 182 and 195.

Branford won the next two bouts by fall before Liam Callahan extended the Foran lead to 32-27 with a pin in 3:40 at 106 pounds.

Branford gained a one-point edge with a pin at 113 before Witte delivered the win.
