Jonathan Law’s had three wrestlers earn berths to this weekend’s State Open, as each placed at the Class M Wrestling Championships in Guilford High last Saturday.

Shayne McCourt (25-5) placed second at 132 pounds, dropping a 5-4 decision to top-seeded Daniel Veleas (32-2) from Berlin in the final. McCourt, seeded second pinned Braden Reilly from New Fairfield in 1:19, before earning a 16-0 semifinal round win by technical fall over third-seeded Will Mauro from Foran

Kevin Brocksom (31-5) took third at 195 pounds with a pin in 2:07 over Foran High’s Nolan Bannon (23-6). Seeded second, Brocksom pinned his way to the semifinals with a 1:54 fall over Logan Mish from Ellis Tech and a 1:58 victory over Woodstock Academy’s Patrick Burrows.

In his first consolation bout, Brocksom defeated Stratford’s Manny Sainville by a 10-1 major decision

Aisaiah Rodriguez (22-8) was fourth at 138 pounds. A junior, Rodriguez lost a 1-0 decision to Camron Louis (22-15) from Ellis Tech in the consolation finals. Seeded fourth, Rodriguez opened the tourney with a 3:15 win by fall over Waterford’s Jeremy Hynek. East Haven’s Amadeo Bugatti was next, with Rodriguez winning 6-4.

In wrestlebacks, Rodriguez secured a spt in the State Open with a 6-5 victory over Foran’s Ethan Edmondson.

Coach Matt Schoonmaker’s Lawmen (76.5) placed 14th.

Foran High (236) won the team title, followed by Killingly (190), Guilford (140) and Ellis Tech (121).

At 106 pounds, Tegan McCourt defeated Kellen Horst by fall in 1:50 before the fifth seed dropped his quarterfinal match with New London’s fourth-seeded Naje Powell-Keyton. Jake DeFonce from Abbott Tech defeated McCourt in consolations.

Freshman Cody Malin won his first state match, defeating Joel Barlow’s Cameron Hirsch, before the 14th-seeded 120-pounder lost to third-seeded Eric Zane and Berlin’s Nathan Orde.

At 126 pounds, sophomore Alex DeLorio pinned Daniel Alexander from Weston in 2:55. Second-seeded Keldon LaRose sent DeLorio to wrestlebacks where he lost to Waterford’s seventh-seeded Tyler Radack.

Alexi Giantomis lost his first match at 145 pounds, then defeated Gavin Douglass from Avon in wrestlebacks, before dropping a 5-1 decision to Foran’s Kevin Pokornowski.
