Oxford defeats Lauralton Hall for SWC title
Lauralton Hall and Oxford High were locked in a scoreless struggle through eight innings before the Wolverines scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to emerge with a 2-0 victory and the South-West Conference softball title at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford on Thursday.
Oxford put the winning rally together with one out, as Makena Hillman and Kaley Kempf put singles together.
With runners on the corners, Megan Sastrum got the first run home with a groundout to second base. Aly Sweeney singled in the second run.
“We knew it was going to be a battle, a pitcher’s duel. (Lauralton's) Hailey Congdon was very good and (Oxford’s) Ashley Guillette is amazing, she’s a Division I pitcher,” Lauralton Hall coach Amanda Acampora said.
Congdon struck out 14 batters through eight innings, and gave up a two-out hit in the top of the third and a one-out single in the seventh.
Guillette, who was voted game MVP, set down 12 straight batters before Lindsey Spitz led off the bottom of the fifth with a solid single to left field.
Guillette, who would finish with 15 strikeouts, had two of them around Hope Hottois’ sacrifice bunt to strand Spitz at second.
Alexa Dawid beat out a bunt single to open the home seventh, and stole second after two infield popups, but was left at second on another strikeout.
