Milford wins fifth straight
Jake Saley shut out Greenwich on five hits and Milford Post 196 defeated the Zone IV champions by a score of 2-0 in a winner’s bracket game at Cubeta Stadium in Stamford on Tuesday morning.
Coach Cliff Bugyi’s team won for the fifth straight time in the state tournament and will play in a winner’s bracket semifinal against Avon (24-8) from Zone I tonight at 6:30 at Muzzy Field in Bristol.
Saley walked one and struck out three in going the distance, as the right-hander lowered his ERA from 1.35 by winning for the fifth time in seven decisions.
“Jake throws strikes and is a competitor,” Bugyi said after his Zone II team ended Greewich’s 20-game win streak.
“Like yesterday [a 5-4 15-inning win over Branford] we played good defense. We swing the bats pretty well and Nick Pinto and Matt Ferraiolo had three hits each from the number eight and nine spots.”
Shawn Cariglio walked to open the second inning and Saley sacrificed him to second.
Christian Baglini hit a hard grounder near the second base bag, and the throw across the diamond was low to put two runners aboard.
Ferraiolo followed with a hard single to center to load the bases for Pinto, who slapped an infield single to the hole to plate Cariglio.
Sean Cameron hit into a 6-4 fielder’s choice, but beat the relay to first and Milford had its 2-0 lead.
Milford (22-6) banged out 10 hits, two from Cameron, but couldn’t push another run across.
Greenwich (27-3) had consecutive singles to open the home sixth, but Saley started a 1-5 force play, Ferraiolo made a good catch in the gap in right-center, and Joe Zanghi threw out a runner trying to steal.
