Milford rallies to Northeast win
Milford Post 196 put together a six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning and advanced in the winner’s bracket of the Northeast Regional American Legion Tournament with a 9-5 victory over Barnstable, Ma. on Saturday.
The Connecticut champions will play Portland, Maine in a winner’s bracket final tonight at 7.
Jake Saley keyed the winning rally with a two-run double.
Christian Baglini, who got the win in relief of Matt Ferraiolo, was hit by a pitch to start the seventh, before Ferraiolo hit into a force play.
Nick Pinto walked before Sean Cameron took a curveball from right-hander George Bent into right field for a single to load the bases.
Kyle Winters, who played a stellar second base in a game that featured four errors by each team, brought a run home when his grounder to the right side was misplayed as Ferraiolo scored.
Eddie Michaud gave Milford a 5-4 lead with a hit between third and short and Joe Zanghi lined an RBI single to center.
After Shawn Cariglio struck out, Saley next drove the ball down the right field line to make it 8-4.
A wild pitch from relief pitcher Pete Liimantainen with Baglini at the plate for the second time in the frame scored Zanghi to complete the scoring.
Barnstable threatened in the top of the eighth, but Baglini struck out two batters and enticed an inning-ending fly ball to Saley in center to leave two runners aboard.
Barnstable took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, with both runs unearned.
Ferraiolo only gave up two hits, but the right-hander struggled with control as he walked eight and hit two batters in six innings of work.
Milford took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, again with all runs unearned.
Michaud and Zanghi led off with singles before Cariglio’s sacifice bunt was thrown away by Bent, as two runs scored.
Cariglio later scored on Saley’s sacrifice fly.
Barnstable retook the lead at 4-3 in the sixth.
Two walks and a hit batter with one out loaded the bases, before Dylan Morse hit a grounder to a drawn-in infield that was misplayed and two runs scored.
Winters, who made a diving grab of a liner to end the fifth with a runner at third, turned Matt Brodd’s liner into a 4-4-3 double play.
After two walks in the ninth, Baglini struck out Danny Walsh and Zanghi threw behind Everett Walsh at first. He was out on a 2-3-6-3 rundown for the game-ending double play, after Barnstable's last run crossed the plate.
Saley had a double and three RBIs, Michaud three hits and an RBI, Zanghi two hits and RBI, Winters a hit and an RBI, and Cameron a single.
