The Milford fencing team celebrated the conclusion of its second successful season with the annual Club Championship at Jonathan Law this past Tuesday night.

Every fencer advanced out of the pools into the direct elimination round, and after more than three hours of intense competition, it came down to very close bouts on both the men’s and women’s side.

Captain Madeline Turiano edged out last year’s champion and senior Michaela Smith for the title by fighting off a spirited comeback that fell just short, with Smith taking the silver and junior Amanda Shaw pushing through injury to capture the bronze.

On the men’s side it was a rematch of last year’s final, with sophomore captain Andrew Hiza winning an intense 15-point match against senior Matt Jason, who took the silver followed by junior Steven Boynton, who netted the bronze.

The team bids good luck and farewell to seniors Madeline Turiano, Michaela Smith, Kevin Korchman, Daniel Williams, Matt Jason and Michael Popp, and will close out the season with an awards banquet at Gusto’s Restaurant on April 2.
