Lucy Weissauer, Ben Lavallee earn award

Lucy Weissauer and Ben Lavallee from Foran High were two of the 10 student-athletes from five high schools named The SportsCenter of Connecticut/Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes of the Month for January.

Now in its eighth year, The SportsCenter of Connecticut/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month program will honor outstanding young men and women each month during the 2013-14 academic year.

“Many thanks to the Sports Center of Connecticut for its support of the SCC and the Scholar Athlete of the Month program,” said SCC Commissioner Al Carbone. “This conference has been proud of its success for the last 18-plus years, and to be able to recognize outstanding young men and women who demonstrate the desire and ability to succeed solidifies what the SCC is all about.”

Student athletes who are selected must be a varsity letterwinner and have a 3.0/B average while demonstrating leadership qualities such as: being a positive role model; helping teammates overcome adversity; showing a commitment to self-improvement; or putting the needs of the team before themselves. Sports Center of CT/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month recipients and receive a certificate, commemorative tee-shirt and a SportsCenter of Connecticut activity pass.

Lucy Weissauer

Captain of both girls basketball and volleyball Weissauer currently sports a 3.94 grade point average, which places her 16th out of 227 students in her graduating class.She is involved in a number of school activities, including National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Natural Helpers, Key Club, and Interact Club.

She has previously been named to the SCC All Academic in all the sports in which she competes.

Foran girls basketball coach Scott Nails said, “Lucy’s teammates look to her guidance. She has led by example since she was a freshmen. Lucy is the best team leader I have coached in my 16 years.”

Ben Lavallee

A captain of the Milford coop boys hockey team, Lavallee is ranked 15th in his graduating class with a 3.9 grade point average.

He is a member of the National Honor Society, Foran Leadership Team and is the 2014 Class Treasurer.

Lavallee has previously been named to the SCC All-Academic team and is a two-sport athlete as he plays lacrosse in the spring.

Foran head hockey coach Sal Follo said, “Benjamin is an outstanding team leader on and off the ice.”

Founded in 1994, the Southern Connecticut Conference is in its 20th season of competition in 2013-14 with 22 member-schools and nearly 23,000 students.

SCC member schools have captured 349 state championships since the league’s inception. More importantly, the SCC is recognized for its outstanding non-athletic programs and events, which attempt to break down barriers and build bridges of understanding to its students.
