With 11 returning starters, including six on defense and five on offense, the Jonathan Law football team is in prime position to improve on its 4-6 campaign last year.

Coach Mark Robinson’s Lawmen kicked off their season last night against Harding High at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport in the SCC-FCIAC Challenge, with their four senior captains leading the charge.

“It should be a good season,” said Robinson, entering his 13th season at Law. “But playing in the SCC, anything can happen.”

Quarterback Tim Maher, wide receiver/defensive back Ryan Siddall, linebacker/fullback Mark Thibault and offensive lineman/linebacker Nick Casagrande will captain the squad.

Maher spearheaded Law’s rushing attack that ground up 2,757 yards on 460 total carries and punched in 33 touchdowns. As a junior, Maher ran for 677 yards and nine scores.

Last season’s leading rusher, fullback Joe Ziebell, returns as well, after racking up 689 yards on 112 carries and seven touchdowns.

Maher added 439 passing yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Siddall, at 6-2, 190-pounds, will be Maher’s top target on the outside.

The 6-0, 260-pound Casagrande will center the offensive line, while 6-3, 240-pound senior Alex Boyd also returns to provide experience up front.

On defense, Ziebell is the leading-returning tackler after notching 70 takedowns — including a pair of quarterback sacks.

Boyd recorded 36 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks and one interception, while Casagrande had 29 tackles and two quarterback pressures. Siddall, a safety, tallied 29 tackles and two passes defended.

Schedule-wise, the Lawmen will square off against Branford, Guilford, Hillhouse and Lyman Hall of Wallingford in the Southern Connecticut Conference Division II West.

They cross over into SCC Division I to tangle with Wilbur Cross and Hamden, and travel to Plainfield for a non-league matchup.

East Haven, Sheehan High of Wallingford and crosstown rivals Foran High complete Law’s regular-season schedule.
