Jonathan Law pressing onward

The Jonathan Law boys lacrosse team hosted Stratford High on May 10, with the Red Devils improving to 6-4 with a 14-5 victory over the Lawmen (0-11).

“Our team is very young, but all in all we’re getting better and better everyday,” said Law coach Michael Forget “We’re still watching film, we’re still making some of the same mistakes in transition. Our transition needs a little work. Our slides defensively and our ability to recycle needs a little bit of work. It’s going to come, we’re working on it.”

Freshman Nick Art led the Lawmen with a pair of scores, while David Patrick, Tommy Faller, Brady Dennigan and Matt Marino also found the net.

Drew Cerone led all scorers with four goals while Mike Cannata, Jake Cayton, Tom Signore and Eric Redgate  added a pair of goals for the Red Devils. Isaiah Booker and Spencer Marks also scored for Stratford.

Redgate started off the scoring for Stratford with a bounce shot goal early in the first quarter.

Dennigan responded for Law with a score of his own 10 yards out to tie the game at 1.

Cayton responded with a side-arm shot from the left of the crease to give the Red Devils a 2-1 lead.

Cannata followed with a laser shot going high over Law keeper Logan Danville to make it 3-1. Cerone followed his  attack mates with a  score on a feed from Brendan Miller to give Stratford a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.

“He (Danville) was a long pole defensemen for us,” Forget said. “He has been taking JV goal for us so we put him up today and he did a pretty good job. We like what he did and that puts us in a quandary a little bit about what to do goal-wise.”

The Red Devils kept attacking in the second quarter, as Cannata scored his second goal from 15 yards out to make it 5-1.

After Cannata scored, Danville, making his first varsity start, turned away a barrage of shots from the Red Devils. Danville was aided by his defensemen Jarrod Butts, Tyler Curtin and Dan Bosler.

Cerone broke through Danville with a dinger into the upper left corner of the net to make it 6-1.

Booker followed with a wrap-around goal, spinning from behind the net and whipping it around Danville for the score. Stratford then scored its seventh consecutive goal on a goal from Signore started by Milller to give the Red Devils a 8-1 lead at the half.

Marino was the first to strike in the second half, scoring on a low shot on a Law breakaway to make it 8-2.

Cerone responded with his third goal, the start of four straight Stratford goals. Redgate was next scoring from five yards out to make it 10-2. Cayton followed with a bounce shot from 15 yards out to increase the lead to 11-2.

Miller registered a third assist when he found Cerone at the crease to give the Red Devils a 12-2 lead going into the fourth quarter.

It was all Law in the final period, as the attack of Tyler Cavallaro, Marino and Art pressured Stratford net minder Steven Tobey.

Art ripped a shot in from 10 yards out to make it a 12-3 game. Faller followed him with a side-arm shot from the left of the crease to make it 12-4.

The Red Devils answered with scores from Signore and Marks, who spun through three defenders and shot high over Denville in net to score the 14th goal for Stratford.

Art followed with his second score of the game a shot from the left of the crease to make it 14-5.
