The first of two regular season golf matches between Foran High and Jonathan Law last Thursday saw the Lawmen defeat the Lions, 179-183, at Grassy Hill Country Club. The Lawmen (2-1) were led by juniors Ryan Mola and Ryan Bedell. Both scored match low scores of 42. Further support came from returning junior Zach Smith with a 46. First-year player, junior Anthony Lomax, shot a 49. The Lions were led by Chris Ricci 43, Chris Thomas 44, J.P. Rossetti 45 and Jofranco Menta 51. “This was a great match and it’s only the beginning of the season,” Law coach Andy Koorejian said. “Both teams played very well in somewhat difficult conditions. Ryan Mola is continuing his great play from last season and Ryan Bedell and Zach Smith have really improved their games.  We have a few new players that need more match time to see what it’s like to play competitive golf, but I really like what I see so far.”

Foran baseball

Foran’s High’s fifth consecutive win featured an outstanding pitching performance from Rich Piscitelli, when the Lions turned back SCC baseball rival Xavier of Middletown 3-0 on Friday.

“Rich threw a great game for is,” Foran coach Garrett Walker said. “He filled the zone up and allowed our defense to play. He competed every pitch, couldn't have asked any more from him.”

Tyler Heenan had a hit and two RBIs in Foran’s three-run second-inning uprising. Ryan Gosselin drove in the other run in the frame with a base hit. John Shannon pitched the Lions to a 4-2 victory over host Hamden High on April 11. Heenan had two hits, including a three-run double in the Lions’ four-run second-inning rally. Kevin Lanese and James Carbone were both 2 for 3 on the day Hamden scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Shannon won for the second time, as Foran captured its fourth straight decision. For the second straight time, Foran won in its last at bat on April 10. Ryan Gosselin came all the way home from second base on a misplayed double play attempt in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Branford High, 5-4. Shane McCone singled, doubled and had an RBI. Gosselin had two hits, including an RBI double. Mark Wootton got the win in relief of Jack Greenspan.

Law softball

Emiley Morey knocked in the decisive run in the sixth inning when Jonathan Law defeated host North Haven, 4-3, on Saturday. Coach Melanie Blude’s Lady Lawmen are 4-1. North Haven is 3-2. Morey’s single scored Skyler Bender to cap a three-run rally. Law took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Bender’s home run. It was 4-0 when the Indians scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Brianna Buccitti got the win. Gina Boccamazzo has a two-run homer. Cali Jolley had three of Law’s eight hits. Despite a six-run sixth inning uprising, Law lost a 9-7 decision to visiting West Haven. Jolley was 3-for-4 and Kacy O’Connor 2-for-3. Boccamazzo added two hits and two RBIs.

Law baseball

Jonathan Law defeated Platt Tech, 20-3, in a five-inning game on Saturday. Zach Merchant got the win on the mound. He had three of Law’s 13 hits, including a triple and a double, and drove in five runs. Dillon LaRoche had three hits, including a home run and a double, and had four RBIs. Bryan Reed tripled knocked in four runs. Connor Creane had three RBIs. Carl Maxwell had a pair of doubles. Platt Tech’s Michael Hernandez hit a double. Reed drove in three runs and Maxwell had two RBIs when Law defeated Career Magnet, 11-1, on Friday. Andrew Hertzog pitched into the sixth inning to get the win. Matt Boath finished up. East Haven scored three runs in the 10th inning to defeat Law. Zach Merchant had a triple and three RBIs. East Haven scored three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Law led 1-0 after three, trailed 3-2 after five and tied the game in the home seventh.

Foran boys lacrosse

Foran High team lost to Bunnell High, 13-8, in Stratford on Saturday. Matt Davidson had three goals and Will Mauro two for the Lions (1-3). Zac Cleary, Ethan McVoy and Andrew Janik also scored goals. Will Mauro and Cleary had two assists. Brendan May and McAvoy had one each. Sean O’Connor had 18 saves.

Girls tennis
