Gymnastics: Foran Lions working to improve scores

With a team of only a dozen gymnasts, it is not uncommon for the Foran High squad to be outnumbered. This was especially so when the Lions visited Jonathan Law on Jan. 28, since Law boasts a roster of 28.

“It’s really important to keep up their with their skills, keep up with their confidence and gain new skills,” coach Dina Savoca said. “We’re trying to challenge them and motivate them to do their best and try hard.”

The Foran gymnasts are learning, improving, and enjoying the season as it unfolds.

“We all have a good time together because we cheer each other on and at practice we do a lot of bonding,” captain Britney Lynch said.

The camaraderie makes the hard work they put in during practice enjoyable.

“It’s a lot of fun because we’re really close-knit,” fellow captain Mya Wheeler added.

Captain Reilly Deschaine said: “We work on skills with girls we’ve become really good friends with over the years.”

The Lions also compete outside of high school.

“Most of the girls work out at private clubs,” Savoca said.

Competing in club gymnastics gives the girls, especially the lesser-experienced team members, opportunities to work on technique and build on their routines.

The team has a trio of gymnasts who are all around competitors: Shea Carroll, Emma Jeru and Sammi Lambert, the latter of whom was second on the bars in the Law meet, with a score of 7.0. Law won the meet 124.25-113.95.

Foran’s roster also includes Kayla Cocchia, Jenna DeEll, Robin Jans, Grace Lavallee, Isabella Pietrosanti and Macy Vital.

“They’ve made some really good progression,” Savoca said. “We’ve been suffering some injuries, but girls have stepped up and put routines together in events they don’t usually do. We want them always practicing the routines even if it’s not an event they usually do — to be ready to step up.”

Following a road meet with Joel Barlow of Redding and the Feb. 7 SCC championships at Law, the Lions jump back into regular-season competition for a pair of meets before the state tourney.

Foran visits Daniel Hand of Madison on Feb 12 at 6 p.m. and hosts Trumbull on Feb. 15 at 5:30.
