Girls track: Law's 400-meter team first at Sectionals
The Jonathan Law girls 400-meter relay team of Holly Caldwell, Rhea Grant, Jocelyn Wirth and Samara Thacker captured first place at the SCC East Sectional meet Monday at Amity High School.
The quartet clocked 52.74 seconds, topping Lyman Hall, which took second in 53.52.
Law scored 38 points in the meet to place eighth — one point behind Daniel Hand. Sheehan won with 128 points.
Based on the relay team’s performance, it was no surprise to see Law’s Thacker take fourth in the 100 (13.14) and Rhea Grant take sixth (13.47).
The duo also placed in the 200 with Thacker taking seventh (28.18) and Grant eighth (28.24).
Senior discus thrower Shawna Winters took third with a toss of 100-feet-10.
Javelin thrower Olivia Kowalski enjoyed a good day taking fifth with a 95-3 throw.
“It was great to see Olivia throw so well and qualify for the state meet,’’ said coach Linwood Schulte.
The 3,200-meter relay also took fifth in 10:17, a school record.
The group, all freshmen, included Katelyn Konareski, Hannah Rascoll, Midori Hughes and Kaylee Brotherton.
Schulte was pleased with all of his relays. In addition to the 400 taking first, and the 3,200 setting a school record, the 1600, made up of junior Grace Wootton and freshmen Rascoll, Konareski and Brotherton, qualified for states with a 4:27.11 effort, which was good enough for a sixth-place finish.
“The relay teams all had a good day,’’ said Schulte. “It was nice to see them all run so well.’’
