Girls soccer: Hand defeats Law in SCC finals

The Daniel Hand High girls soccer team got a first-half goal from Sophie Cohen (15:14) and a pair of unassisted second-half goals, one from Kayla Howard (29:10) and the other from Taylor Scully (9:38), and defeated Jonathan Law 3-0 on Thursday night in the Southern Connecticut Conference's girls soccer championship game played at West Haven's Ken Strong Field.

Hand entered the contest as the No. 1 seed and ran its overall record to 17-1-1.

Law, which reached the finals after wins over Amity Regional (1-0) and Sheehan of Wallingford (3-0) dropped to 13-2-3. It was the No. 3 seed.

Hand held a wide 13-3 margin in shots and had nine corner kicks compared to two for Law.

Law's sophomore goalkeeper Jillian Hall made five saves while her counterpart Morgan Lipford had to push aside two.

"I believe that we deserved to be here because we beat two very good teams to reach the final," said Law coach J.D. Rhode. "Unfortunately, tonight Hand was the better team."
