Using a stingy, man defense, the Lauralton Hall basketball team outscored city rival Foran High, 25-8, in the second half on Thursday night on its way to a 48-28 victory over the Lions at the Edna Fraser Gym.

Leading 23-20 at halftime, the Crusaders, winners of five of their last six games, held Foran to three points in the third quarter and five in the final eight minutes.

Meanwhile, Lauralton (5-6), who will play host to defending Class M state champion St. Joseph of Trumbull on Monday night at 7, got 12 points from senior guard Amethyst Barzee and 11 from Trish Gildea.

Foran, now 4-7 and awaiting a Southern Connecticut Hammonasset Division game Friday against Hillhouse, saw Viktoria Notholt score 10 points, all in the first half, and Lauren Notholt add six.

“Our main concern tonight was stopping their big players (both Notholts and Jade Lord) from scoring inside,” said Lauralton Hall coach Amanda Forcucci. “I thought we denied them the ball pretty well and forced other players to have to pick up the slack. Offensively, I thought we were able to run the floor well.”

“Every time we take on an SCC opponent we know that we’re in for a battle,” said Foran’s first-year coach Bob Asmussen. “They’re known for their tough man-to-man defense. We had a difficult time with it especially in the second half.”

Foran held two leads in the first quarter and the Crusaders pushed ahead for good at 9-8 on a buzzer beating shot by Barzee.
