Girls basketball: Jonathan Law tips Foran High in overtime

Cali Jolley knocked down a buzzer-beating 3-point basket to force overtime and Samara Thacker was lights out from the foul line in the extra session to lead host Jonathan Law to a 50-47 victory over rival Foran High at the James L. Richetelli Sr. Gym on Friday.

“I knew the play (drawn up in a timeout),” Jolley said. “It felt awesome because it gave us a chance to keep playing. We wanted to redeem ourselves and show what we are made of.”

Jolley followed her three with a baseline jumper to open overtime. That gave Law its first lead of the game at 46-44.

Foran’s Mia Tunucci turned a tough rebound into a three-point play midway through OT, but it was all Thacker after that. The senior point guard took the ball to the rim and made five consecutive free throws.

The Lions had possession down 48-47, but Law’s Olivia Kowalski stole an entry pass with 21 seconds on the clock. Thacker made a pair from the stripe and Foran’s last possession didn’t result in a shot being taken.

“I swear time just stopped on Cali’s shot,” said Thacker, who had the assist. “We had to fight like it was a zero-zero game. Our shots weren’t falling, so I had to drive to the basket.”

Law’s win ups its record to 9-2 overall and 8-3 in the SWC.

Foran, which defeated Law 60-55 in overtime back in December, is 8-3 and 6-3 SCC.

“That first game stuck with us,” Law coach Dan Young said. “Watching that film was not fun and it motivated the girls. If we wanted to compete with Foran and other good teams we had to reach down.”

Foran had leads of 5-2, 23-14 and 33-32 at the breaks.

“We couldn’t close the game out,” Lion coach Bob Asmussen said. “We had too many turnovers against their press and too many unforced turnover as well. We played at a pace we didn’t need to with the lead.

“We didn’t get out on time to defend the three by Jolley. She is a great, clutch player. They did a nice job spreading us out and reversing the ball.”

Thacker finished with 16 points, Jolley 15 and Fallon Andriolas 12.

Katie Konareski came off the bench to spark Law in the second quarter.

A sophomore, Konareski scored seven points in the last 2:24, including a three-point play off a rebound.

Foran placed four players in double figures: Jasmine Lord and Tunucci with 12 apiece and Sam Inthapanhya and Lauren Heenan with 11 points each.

Lord was 5 for 5 from the foul line in a personal nine-point second quarter.

Tunucci, who finished with 12 rebounds, had four points in the frame.

Heenan came off a Courtney Musante screen, took a pass from Inthapanhya, and buried a three.

In the third quarter, Law kept cutting into its deficit only to see Foran get it back in the seven-point range.

Tunucci, who was a pain in the neck to the Law front court all game, drew four fouls rebounding and on the block in the first five minutes of the third.

In the final three minutes, Jolley, Andriolas and Thacker each scored off drives through traffic.

Andriolas’ three-pointer made it a one-point game with eight minutes remaining.

Inthapanhya and Heenan buried open looks for a four-point Lion lead with 3:53 left.

Heenan made two freebies at 1:39 to stake Foran to a 42-36 advantage.

Andriolas’ second trey came off a four-pass play, and Thacker had a steal and layup to take the score to 42-41 with 1:03 on the clock.

Inthapanhya stole a pass down low, was fouled, and connected on both free throws.

Down 44-41 with 25 seconds left, Law called timeout, set up one final shot, and Jolley nailed it.

Cali Jolley: Made the shot that forced overtime. She scored 10 points in the second quarter to bring her team back within 33-32.

“I knew the play (drawn up in a timeout),” Jolley said. “It felt awesome because it gave us a chance to keep playing. We wanted to redeem ourselves and show what we are made of.”
