Paced by junior forward Lauren Notholt’s 25 points and 14 rebounds, the Foran High girls basketball team defeated West Haven, 51-37, on Friday night for its first Southern Connecticut Conference victory for Bob Asmussen, who is in his first year coaching the Lions.

Foran, which now has a 3-5 record and is winners of three of its last four, broke the game open in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Blue Devils 19-9.

West Haven (1-5) pulled to within a point, 31-30, on a basket by Madison Watts in the first minute of the final stanza, before Foran went on a 6-0 run with two baskets from Lauren Notholt and another from Lindsey Broderick.

Broderick finished with nine points, all of them in the fourth quarter where she converted 7-of-8 free-throw attempts along with her field goal.

Viktoria Notholt added seven points and had six rebounds as the Lions had 51 caroms for the game compared to 46 for West Haven.

Foran turned the ball over 24 times to 21 for West Haven.

Marianna Kalander led the Westies with 10 points.

“We started our season very slow, losing our first four games,” Asmussen said. “But our kids came to practice and kept working harder and harder. We were able to spread out our offense well in the fourth quarter tonight by putting Jade Lord in the high post. She’s an excellent passer.”

Asmussen agreed that it was a game his team needed to win.

“Now that we’re into our SCC schedule, the games aren’t going to get any easier,” he said. “Our players need to keep that in mind. But I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far in our practices.”
