Girls basketball: Foran High

The Foran Lions girl basketball team lost to the Branford Hornets, 40-28, in an SCC matchup on Milford on Jan. 9.

Foran started a very young line up, including two freshman and two sophomores, led by junior captain Lindsey Broderick.

Broderick scored nine points and Lauren Notholt scored seven points to lead Foran (0-8), while Adrienne DiGioia led all scorers with 12 points for Branford (3-5), winners of three straight games.

“We’re improving, the little things, slowly we’re getting there,” said Foran head coach Stephanie Hiriak.

“We’re working harder, on defense and offense, that was my biggest thing since the beginning of the season.”

The first quarter was low scoring, with poor shooting and solid baseline defense being the two main factors.

Julia Munore opened the scoring for Branford, followed by a fast-break drive and finish by Broderick to get Foran on the board. Robin Norko of Branford ended the quarter with a 3-pointer to put Branford up 11-4.

The scoring opened up in the second period. Branford, rotating a lot of players, went on an 8-0 to extend their lead to 13 and went into the half up 25-10.

The second half began with a lot of fouls and missed shots, creating a sloppy first few minutes of play.

Foran began to battle back, with a 3-pointer from Broderick followed two made free throws from sophomore Jess McQuade to spark a 9-2 run that cut the lead to 27-19.

The fourth quarter began with good ball movement from both teams, but neither could knock down any shots.

After a layup from Foran’s Jade Lord, Norko made another 3-pointer to put Branford up nine with less than three minutes to play.

Foran implemented a full court press and tried to foul its way back into the game, but Branford grinded out the victory with a final score of 40-28.

While the results may look dim for Foran, there is plenty to build on.

“We are very young, they don’t have a lot of experience at the varsity level, but it will help us next year and the year after that. We just need to learn game by game,” Hiriak said.

Foran will host Jonathan Law at 7 p.m. on Friday. The boys team play at 5:15.
