Foran seniors go out with 58-53 victory

Led by a career-high 17 points from Billy Suech, the Foran High boys basketball team closed out its season with a 58-53 Southern Connecticut Conference win over Sheehan of Wallingford on Friday night in the Edna Fraser Gymnasium.

The victory, however, wasn’t enough to qualify the Lions (7-13) for either next week’s SCC playoffs or the Class M state tournament. Foran was eliminated from post-season play following a 36-33 loss to Branford on Wednesday night.

“I thought that we played with tremendous energy and had excellent ball movement tonight,” said Foran coach Tim Swaller. “We also played with lots of pride. Our six seniors wanted to go out with a win and they did just that.”

Suech, along with fellow seniors Nick Weissauer, Tyler Kasuba, Sean Deegan, Matt Gomes and Bob Notholt played their final games in a Foran uniform and were recognized before the contest started.

After falling behind, 50-49, with 3:10 left in the fourth quarter, the Lions took the lead at 51-50 when David Enders made a pair of free throws with 1:27 left.

In all, the Lions were 11-of-13 from the foul line in the final eight minutes.

Notholt added 14 points to go with 10 rebounds and Weissauer hit double figures by scoring 12 points.

Sheehan, 7-12, was paced by 19 points from Mike Tiedemann and 13 from Brandon Rentes.

The Titans held a 38-30 margin in rebounds and shot 18-of-48 from the field. Foran was 18-of-44 from the field and 18-of-23 from the foul line.

Foran also connected on eight 3-pointers, led by five from Suech.
