Foran's Ashley Mendillo two hits Jonathan Law

Ashley Mendillo pitched a two-hitter and the Foran High softball team rode Dani Kemp’s three-run home run and Alex Ives’ round-tripper to a 7-0 victory over visiting Jonathan Law on Wednesday.

Mendillo, who struck out six batters, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Megan Smith singled off her glove. Mendillo posted a strikeout and then Gege Romero followed with a hot shot past a diving Kemp at shortstop.

Mendillo notched a strikeout and got the third out on a grounder to second to preserve the shut out.

“No, I don’t follow that stuff,” Mendillo answered when asked if she knew about the possible no-hitter. “I know by pitching I’m helping me team and I have great defense behind me.”

Foran took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Hannah DeSousa singled with one out, and was forced out at second by Kemp, who stole second base. Kayla Gosselin singled Kemp home.

The Lions tacked on two more runs in the fourth.

Ashley Mendillo was hit on a 3-2 pitch by Law’s Aubrey Bepko to start things off.

Ives’ sacrifice bunt was misplayed before Jenna Zacarelli’s bunt moved the runners into scoring position.

Amanda Mendillo brought the first run home on a grounder to Cassidy Boath at shortstop. The second run scored on Amanda Portoff’s bunt.

Foran came out swinging in the fifth inning.

Natalia Hart led off with a single, the Lions’ third hit of the game, and DeSousa followed with another base hit.

Kemp then drove a pitch well over the fence in centerfield to take the score to 6-0.

Ives’ home run didn’t go as far, but cleared the fence and the surprised junior was greeted at home plate by her ecstatic teammates.

“Last time we played Law they had nine runs in the first inning (off Ashley Mendillo),” Foran coach Jeff Bevino said. “How about that kid? She really wanted this.”

Law coach Melanie Paolini said, “We’ve been in a little bit of a hitting funk and we’ve been trying to battle through that. They (Foran) hit the ball today and we didn’t. They made the plays behind there pitcher.”

Bevino said about Law: “That’s a real good hitting team. We got that run early. We have power on this team and showed some of that power today.”
