Foran girls lacrosse avenges loss to Stratford

The Foran High girls lacrosse team defeated Stratford High, 10-8, at Penders Field.

Taylor Wisniewski netted three goals for the Lions (3-3), who won their second game in a row. Kiara Kanlong and Hayley Byers added two goals apiece, while Julia Astram, Hailey McGinnis and Eva Knudsen chipped in with one marker apiece.

Goalkeeper Shea Phelan made 10 saves.

“We came down here last year and lost to these guys 9-7,” Foran head coach Jack Connors said. “We were looking to find that little something deep inside to win the close games. I think that’s what we are learning how to do. Play hard lacrosse.”

Genesis Torres led Stratford (1-4) with four goals, while Cora Martonak had three goals and Gillian Mariconda one. Goalie Kasey Herrera had 18 saves.

Foran led 7-3 at the half, but the Red Devils rallied with three quick tallies to open the second half.

Martonak netted the first goal of the run at 22:05, followed by another from Torres 30 seconds later. Torres then scored on a free shot at 20:37.

The Lions responded, restoring their two-goal cushion at 15:18, when Astram got free and snapped a shot past Herrera.

“She came back like a champ,” said Connors, after Astram was shaken up earlier in the contest.

Another goal from Martonak narrowed the margin to 8-7 with 13:11 left, before Wisniewski, at 6:52, and Byers, at 2:10, provided insurance markers.

The first goal was set up by Kanlong, who corralled a loose ball to allow the Lions to get into their offense.

“She came in on a recovery on the far side of the field,” Connors said. “We retained possession and were able to get that two-goal lead back.”

Stratford got a late goal with 8.5 seconds left from Torres to provide the final scoreline.
