Foran defeats Coginchaug in season finale

Junior Leandro Jorge scored twice while seniors James Berkovich and Joe Kubic added single goals last night when the Foran High boys soccer team closed out its season with a 4-3 victory over Coginchaug Regional of Durham at the Vito DeVito Sports Complex.

Coach Rick DiStefano’s Lions concluded their season with a 4-11-1 record, finishing with a win and a tie in their final two games, played on back-to-back nights. Foran and Law played to a 1-1 draw on Monday evening.

Berkovich, one of six seniors playing in their final game, scored in the game’s 27th minute and Jorge netted his first of two goals with 2:58 to play in the half.

Coginchaug’s Kyle Judson made it a 2-1, converting off a corner kick with 2:30 left.

Jorge’s second goal of the game gave the Lions a 3-1 lead just 10:52 into the second half.

The Blue Devils’ Garrett D’Amato cut Foran’s lead to 3-2, scoring at 26:53 off a corner kick, before Kubic put Foran back on top by two goals when he beat Coginchaug goalie Daniel Gavrilovic at 26:53.

Coginchaug, however, came right back. Alec Bogen’s score in the game’s 61st minute made it 4-3.

Foran had three chances in the game’s final 12 minutes to increase its lead.

Claudio Dos Santos hit the crossbar once and launched one shot over the net, while Kubic’s shot from in close went wide with only three minutes left.

Coginchaug held a 17-16 edge in shots in the wide-open game.

Foran goalie Prashant Patel made 11 saves and Gavrilovic turned aside nine.

The Blue Devils also concluded their season under Chris Cap, a former head coach at Foran, with a 4-11-1 mark.

Foran defeated Coginchaug, 4-1, earlier in the season.

Seniors honored before the game included Berkovich, Kubic, Patel, Dos Santos, Joe Buzelle and Tyler Phillips.
