Foran booters fall to Shelton, at Law tonight
Coach Casey Blake's Foran High Lions (4-6-2) will visit Jonathan Law in a girls soccer match tonight at 7. Coach J.D. Rhode's Eagles are 1-9-2. They played Daniel Hand to a 0-0 tie on Thursday. The rivals played to a 2-2 draw in their first meeting on Sept. 21.
Foran lost to Shelton High, 3-0, on Thursday, as Kylee Opper scored a pair of goals to lead the Gaelettes (6-2-3).

Shelton's Juliane Niedzwiecki spotted Opper running free up the sideline and delivered a spot-on pass to the junior, who beat a defender and booted a shot off Foran’s closing keeper Samantha Mitchell and into the net at the 26:28.
Opper’s second tally was a thing of beauty. After receiving Kathryn Arena’s head-flick pass 30-yards out, Opper used three dribbles, the last a crossover to create space before blasting a rising shot from just outside the 18 that Mitchell got two hands on but couldn’t stop. Shelton led 2-0 with 16:18 remaining in the first half.
Kaleigh Panek’s goal completed a fine passing sequence, with Kristen Willey finding Panek, who rocketed a shot off a diving Mitchell by the near post at the 6:49 mark.
Mitchell, who had five fine saves in an active first half, re-injured a shoulder on the play and was taken to the hospital. Maddy Mitchell, who finished with five stops, came on to play goal for the Lions (4-5-2).
Shelton goalie Courtney Litts had four saves before Shelby Offord (one save) took the field in the second half.
It took only three minutes for Shelton to challenge. Panek brought the ball into the 18 and blasted a shot that Sam Mitchell blocked, then recovered. Willey’s had a shot rise over the crossbar at 35:31 and Opper was denied by Sam Mitchell with a well-timed dive to the keeper’s right at 33:16.
Foran had its first chance nine minutes in on a nifty give-and-go between Sydney Szalkiewicz and Carly Malesky. Michelle Gutierrez read the next pass and stepped in to break up the opportunity.
Litts’ first save came at 26:43 off a scramble in front on a shot by Meghan Sengstacken.
Niedzwiecki quickly countered, as the Shelton playmaker fed Opper for the game’s first goal.
Shelton's Sarah Skoronski’s pass to the middle to Arena forced Sam Mitchell to again go to ground for a save by the near post at 24:54 of the first half.
Foran’s Malesky earned a corner from Cass Bennett, but the the line drive didn't result in a shot on net.
Opper made it 2-0 in the next minute.
Arena’s pass off a fine step-over to Skoronski was cleared and before Shelton stopped a crossing attempt from Haley Byers to Monica Malangone.
At 17:28, Skoronski had a good attempt that led to a great save after a fine passing sequence, led by Niedzwiecki.
Litts came off her mark to snare a crossing pass from Cassondra Zak to Milani Gray, before Panek gave Shelton a 3-0 lead with 6:49 remaining in the half.
Litts had her toughest stretch over the next three minutes, as Foran kept possession.
Shelton answered and forced Maddie Mitchell to match her sister’s intensity, with stops on Arena, Opper and Shuster.
Maddie Mitchell made seven saves for Foran in a 3-0 loss to an 8-1-2 Guilford High squad on Saturday.
