Football: Westies outduel Lions

The Foran High football team played a strong second half but couldn't overcome its first-half deficit in a 38-28 setback to West Haven High on Friday night at the DeVito Sports Complex.

A 50-yard touchdown pass from Tim McCarthy to Zatrell Lyons with 38.8 seconds left in the first half gave West Haven (2-0) a 21-7 halftime edge.

Foran (0-2),  behind tailback Stephen Longley and quarterback Jake Kasuba, fought back, making it a 27-14 game in the third quarter after Longley rumbled 12 yards off tackle for a touchdown. Marshont Little then scored a 54-yard touchdown on West Haven's first play from scrimmage after the Blue Devils covered an onside kick.

The Lions responded with a 16-play, 70-yard scoring drive, capped by a one-yard plunge from Longley, who scored three TDs on the night, to make it 35-21 following Joe Radecki's PAT kick. Tayvon Gibbs kicked a 30-yard field goal to extend West Haven's lead to 38-21, before Kasuba threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Pat Fitzgerald to close out the scoring.
