Football: Foran High falls to Wilbur Cross
The Foran High football team lost its season opener, 40-21, to Wilbur Cross in New Haven on Friday.
Coach Jeff Bevino’s Lions took an 8-0 lead on Lance DiNatale’s 15-yard scoring pass to Zach Cleary and Jared Hubler’s two-point conversion catch.
Brett Huber had an 8-yard catch and Hubler rambled 18 yards after a reception to set up the score.
Nazsier Torrence broke off a 55-yard run to get the Governors within 8-6 with 2:28 left to play in the opening quarter.
Wilbur Cross’ defense forced Foran back to its 11, where a high snap on a punt attempt went out of the end zone for a two-point safety as the first period came to a close.
Foran’s Steve Lynch had an interception to stop one Wilbur Cross series and the senior captain then blocked a punt, which was returned for a touchdown by Huber for a 14-8 lead with 2:29 to play in the half.
Wilbur Cross made use of the time remaining.
Terrell Watts hit Will Simmons for a 44-yard touchdown with 22 secondds left to play in the first half.
Wilbur Cross won the third quarter, 20-7.
Dyante Howard had touchdown runs of 9 and 20 yards before DiNatale threw a 28-yard scoring pass to Hubler. Cleary kicked the conversion.
Simmons returned the kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown for a 34-21 lead.
Howard’s 7-yard run in the final period capped the scoring.
