Football: Amity defeats Law, 41-21
Jonathan Law scored first, before Amity High took control by turning takeaways into touchdowns to win a 41-21 SCC decision in Woodbridge on Friday.
Coach Ted Czepiga’s Spartans lost its first two games and are now 1-2.
Coach Erik Larka’s Lawmen are 1-2 after splitting Tier III games before losing to Tier II team Amity.
Law quarterback Mitchell Smith threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Cole Egersheim to cap its second possession. Egersheim hit the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter.
Amity would score the next 35 points, but not in the usual means.
Spartan captain and linebacker Ryan Bedin read a pass intended for Egersheim over the middle and picked it off and returned it to the Law 38.
Four plays later, Colin Beaulieu went around right end for a 21-yard touchdown. Jordan Conn’s conversion kick tied the game with 9:18 left in the half.
Amity kept shooting linebackers to try and disrupt the Lawmen, and Elis Feola’s pressure resulted in a safety and a 9-7 Spartan lead at the 8:18 mark.
Beaulieu returned the ensuing free kick 68 yards for a touchdown. The PAT made it 16-7.
Law earned one first down on a catch from Dean Pettway, but Smith fumbled the ball while attempting to pass and the 13-yard loss forced Jake Bombace to punt from his own end zone.
Taking over on the Law 38, Amity scored in three plays with Beaulieu tallying on a 33-yard run for a 23-7 advantage.
After an exchange of punts, Law moved the chains twice for a first-and-goal at the nine on a 12-yard pass to Hayden Hulme. Two sacks around a false start ended the drive as the half ended.
Law got the ball to open the third quarter and Mike Plaskon ran the kickoff back 35 yards to the Amity 45.
Law moved the chains three times to earn a first down at the 10. On fourth-and-goal, Amity’s Matt Weidenfeller jumped the pass route and returned the pick 99 yards for a touchdown.
Amity then turned a fourth-and-six from the Law 43 into a touchdown when quarterback Paul Buda found Alessandro Pacelli open for the score.
Plaskon returned the next kick 49 yards to the Amity 33 with two minutes remaining in the third period.
Ethan Saley caught a 29 yard pass to bring the ball to the four.
On fourth-and-goal from the eight, Amity’s Luke Smith picked off a pass at the goal line and motored 100 yards for another Spartan touchdown and a 41-7 lead with 24 seconds left in the quarter.
Law went 65 yards in five plays to score on Smith’s 9-yard pass to Hulme with 6:45 left.
It added another score on Mitchell Smith’s 29-yarder to Saley with 2:42 on the clock. Egersheim made both conversion kicks.
