The Jonathan Law girls soccer team defeated visiting Foran High, 2-0, on Wednesday.
The SCC contest was dominated by midfield play in the first half, before coach J.D. Rhodes’ Eagles found an opening.
Taylor Kandrach controlled the ball off a throw-in and fed Paige Szygiel, who left the ball for Bethany Edwards. She created space and then split two Foran defenders, before striking a shot past Lion keeper Carly Pala.
The goal came 1:36 seconds into the second half, and Law found the net again just over three minutes later.
Emily LaLuna chipped a pass to open space for Szygiel. From there, it was a footrace to the ball and Szygiel got their half a second before Pala. The players collided and the ball had enough force to roll into the met for a 2-0 Law lead at the 35:10 mark.
Coach Casey Blake's Lions threatened late in the game, but Law keeper Amanda Leone was equal to the challenge. She stopped a long sequence of pressure from Foran’s Monica Malangone, Emily Kwalek, Alexia Malangone and Josselin Lathuras in the 76th minute.
The Lions had consecutive corners, their only ones of the game, but with a free ball in the box on the second oppontunity, Law was awarded a goal kick when the ball went off a Lion near the post with 57 seconds remaining.
