Cori Sales: from Milford United to CCSU

Soccer has taken Cori Scales from playing for Milford United, to four successful seasons at St. Joseph of Trumbull and ultimately earned the Milford native a spot at Central Connecticut State University.

“It’s always been about team, family,” Scales said after signing to play for the Division I Blue Devils in a ceremony at St. Joseph on Friday, Feb. 7. “My teammates are my best friends and we had amazing chemistry.

That bonding began in earnest during the preseason, when the Cadets decided as one what they were going to play for.

“We basically told each other “No excuses,’” Scales said. “We had one mission and that was winning a state title. We worked hard on reaching that goal every day in practice.”

And no one outworked Scales come tourney time, when the third-seeded Cadets completed a 22-0-1 campaign with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Suffield in the Class LL championship game.

“When we made our run in the states this year, Cori was out best player against Glastonbury in the semifinals and Suffield in the final,” said St. Joseph head coach Jack Nogueria. “A captain, a four-year starter, she’s been All-FCIAC the past two seasons.

“During her career, she helped the team to a pair of FCIAC titles, back to back, and a state title this year. Overall, we went 71-10-6 during her four years. That’s an eighty-five percent winning percentage.”

Scales will major in marketing at CCSU, which went 7-13 for coach Mick D’Arcy and reached the Northeast Conference semifinals in 2013.

“The coaches were great on my visit, and so were the players,” said the daughter of Rhonda and Tarik. “That made it an easy decision.”
