Trumbull’s Caroline Sargent, the defending Connecticut Class M state champion in the 100 backstroke, has given her verbal commitment to attend the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) next fall.

Sargent said, “When I walked on the UMBC campus, I immediately loved the school. Coach Chad and Coach Chris, and the whole team, made me feel so welcome when I was there. I knew then that I was meant to spend the next four years at UMBC.”

Sargent competes for The Academy of Our Lady of Mercy Lauralton Hall, coached by Fran Pfeiffer, and the Westport-Weston Family YMCA Water Rat swim team, where she is coached by Ellen Johnston.

While at Lauralton Hall, the team won the Class M State title in both her freshman year and sophomore year, with Sargent placing in both individual and relay events.

The versatile Sargent, who most often races the 200 and 400 IMs, and 100 and 200 back  is a two-time All-State swimmer and a two-time State Open qualifier. She has competed at YMCA Short Course Nationals.

Sargent, a two-time Connecticut Swimming Scholar Athlete and an honor roll student at Lauralton Hall, is a member of the Chinese National Honor Society.
