Caleb Tondora to run track at Bryant University
Foran High’s Caleb Tondora took the advice of a soccer teammate, added track to his things to do, and now the son of Janice and Frank Tondora has signed a National Letter of Intent to become a member of the track team at Bryant University (R.I.)
Tondora, surrounded by family and friends, signed the agreement letter to attend play for the Division I Bulldogs at a confirmation ceremony at the high school last week.
Tondora spent the majority of his youth in local soccer programs and had always thought he would pursue playing soccer at the college level. “With your height (6 foot), you should give the high jump in track a shot,” one of the Lion booters told him.
Little did he know his track skills would provide the path that had recruiters knocking at his door.
He was also pursued by Ithaca College, Connecticut College and Bentley University.
Accepted for entry to Bentley’s Honors Program, due to his excellent academic performance while at Foran, Tondora plans to major in Data Science and Applied Math/Statistics, eventually landing a job in sports analytics.
“While my years here at Foran have been tremendous, I am really looking forward to what the next four will bring,” Tondora said. “I can’t wait to get started.”
Foran head track coach Pete Jambor is happy Tondora joined his program.
“Caleb has been a top performer in track and field for four years (3 years outdoor and 1 year indoor),” Jambor said. “He has been a solid sprinter and jumper during the spring season, but has mainly focused on soccer for the remainder of the year.
“Realizing his potential in his favorite event — the high jump — Caleb decided take advantage of the opportunities that indoor track offered (more meets, more practice time) in order to take his abilities to the next level.
“He placed fourth in the SCC championships and second Class M, which earned him a berth at the State Open championships. This commitment to track caught the eyes of the Bryant University coaching staff.
“Aside from his physical skills, Caleb is a coach's dream come true. A polite, respectful young man, he is a leader and an athlete who is admired by teammates and opponents alike. He treats everyone with a caring attitude that makes even the quietest freshman feel like he is welcome and an important part of the team.”
