The Foran High boys soccer team lost a 1-0 decision to Bassick High of Bridgeport in the first round of the Class L state tournament at Kennedy Stadium on Tuesday night.

Bassick, the ninth seed, got the game’s lone goal from Enock Kalonji with 31:12 left in the second half, as the senior forward converted on a one-man counterattack following a Foran freekick.

Kalonji’s marker stood up, despite some quality late chances from Foran’s Cedrick Lingane and Ryan Young. Foran’s Jimmy Cronin nearly leveled the game with 27:25 left, attempting to loft the ball in from 30 yards out. His audacious chip beat the keeper, but bounced up and over the crossbar, as Bassick clung to its lead.

The victory was Bassick’s first in the state tournament in over 40 years, while No. 24 seed Foran was seeking to advance in the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Bassick, making its first appearance in states since 2011, will take on No. 8 seed Bethel High (12-3-1) in a second-round matchup.

Foran finished its season 6-9-2 overall.
