Boys hockey: Guilford defeats Milford

The Guilford High boys hockey team got hat-trick performances from senior captain Stephen Thibault and junior forward Ricky Sandella and put 11 players in the scoring column on Thursday night in an 11-5 win over the Milford Co-op team in a game held at the Veterans Memorial Rink in East Haven.

Guilford (4-2-1) scored six times in the opening period and outshot Milford 14-3 in the process, in the game played between SCC Division II rivals.

Guilford got three more goals in the second period for a 9-0 lead before Milford’s Santiago Palacio broke the shut-out with a score at the 12:18 mark.

Milford had a mini-rally late in the contest, getting two goals from Jimmy Cronin and single scores from Jacob Comeau and Tommy Kuryla.

Guilford held a 30-18 edge in shots on goal.

Milford’s freshman goalie Luke Alfano made 19 saves.

Guilford’s Kyle Dwyer and Eric Malicki combined for 13 saves.

Guilford took 39 shots compared to 31 for Milford.

“We played very poorly tonight, especially in the first period,” said Milford Co-op coach Sal Follo. “Our defense and goaltending weren’t good. And you can’t come out early against any SCC Division II opponent like we did tonight and not expect any other outcome.”

The 4-4 Indians have close to a week off before returning to the Vet next Wednesday night when they’ll take on East Haven.
