Baseball: Foran falls to West Haven
The Foran High baseball team dropped a 9-6 decision to West Haven High at Piurek Field in an SCC interdivision game on Thursday afternoon.
Foran trailed 9-3 in the top of sixth, but Anthony Raccio's bases-clearing triple made it 9-6. Two batters later, Josh Mixie walked and the Lions has two cracks at it with the tying run at the plate.
But, Westie reliever Adrian Urbina retired Colin Firmender and R.J. Jackson to preserve the lead. Urbina then nailed down the save in the top of the seventh, retiring pinch hitter Joe Radecki on a grounder back to the mound with a runner on first.
The Lions, who qualified for the Class L state tournament with a 2-0 win over Wilbur Cross of New Haven yesterday, will now be idle until the playoffs open on June 1.
Against West Haven, the Lions (8-12) scored twice in the top of the first. Jackson slammed an RBI triple and Bryan Firmender drove him in with a ground out to shortstop. West Haven, winners of four straight, tied it in the bottom of the frame on Jay Wilkerson's RBI double and a run-scoring groundout from Jake Kelly.
Foran starting pitcher Dylan Bartel, who took the mound loss to fall to 1-1, doubled to start the second, before scoring on R.J. Balado's RBI single. Joe Sette's run-scoring single tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the second, before West Haven took the lead for good on Lou Masselli's RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.
West Haven (10-10) tacked on two more runs in the fourth, with Masselli crunching a two-run double. Run-scoring singles from Mike Savino and Wilkerson and a sacrifice fly from Sette made it 9-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
Mike Howell led the Lions at the plate with two hits. Masselli went 3-for-4 for the Westies, while Alex Tejero and Wilkerson added two hits apiece. Lorenzo Davis won the game on the mound, improving to 2-2, surrendering all six Lion runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking two.
