COLLEGE BASEBALL: UT advances, Tech drops 1st game at Big 12 Tourney

ARLINGTON – Jackson Nicklaus belted a three-run homer to help No. 3 seed Oklahoma hand No. 2 Texas Tech its first loss in the Big 12 Tournament on Thursday.

The Red Raiders (37-19) fell to the loser’s bracket and will face Kansas State (28-28) in an elimination game at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Sooners (35-20) advanced to Saturday’s semifinal at 12:30 p.m, and they will await the winner of Texas Tech and KSU.

OU was boosted by a fine start from Jake Bennett, who limited Tech to one run on two hits and two walks over 7 2/3 innings, while striking out 12.

Nicklaus’ three-run blast gave the Sooners a 3-0 lead in the third before Dillon Carter cut the Raiders’ deficit to 3-1 with a sac fly in the third.

The Sooners tacked on three runs in the seventh to take a 6-1 advantage. Peyton Graham provided the key blow with a two-run single in the frame.

Tech made the ninth interesting when Kurt Wilson swatted a two-run homer, which scored Lee grad Ty Coleman before Oklahoma closer Trevin Mitchell struck out the final batter to end the game, while stranding a runner on second.

He took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a ground out and scored on an error as the Horned Frogs pushed a run across without benefit of a hit. TCU pulled within a run in the sixth when Elijah Nunez led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brayden Taylor.

Texas added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth off TCU reliever Luke Savage. Hodo doubled with one out and moved to third on Eric Kennedy's infield single. Both runners advanced on a balk, plating Hodo. Austin Todd drove in Kennedy with a two-out single to make it 5-2.

Gray Rodgers hit a two-out solo homer in the ninth for the Horned Frogs to cap the scoring.

ARLINGTON (AP) — Justin Campbell struck out 10 in seven innings, Griffin Doersching hit a three-run homer and No. 4 seed Oklahoma State beat eighth-seeded Baylor on Thursday in the Big 12 Tournament.
