Bill Weidner has been named the new director of athletics for Wayland Baptist University, the school announced on Wednesday.

Weidner takes over for the departed Rick Cooper, who stepped down earlier this year before taking a role with the Texas Tech men’s basketball team, reuniting with Mark Adams in Lubbock.

Weidner was most recently the vice present for development and director of athletics for University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M., serving in that role from 2013 to 2018.

“I am most appreciative and deeply humbled of having been granted the opportunity to serve as the director of intercollegiate athletics at Wayland Baptist University,” Weidner said in the news release. “Wayland and its storied athletic program have a rich heritage and a proven tradition of excellence in both the academic and athletic arenas. I am honored to serve at an institution that places the dispositions of scholarship, community and faith as foundational principles upon which to build the future successes of its students through the development of servant leadership.”

Previous stops for Weidner included being the athletic director at Ashland University, the University of Texas-Pan American and Weber State. He was also previously the deputy athletic director at the University of Central Florida and the University of San Francisco.

WBU has had very few AD’s over the last 30 years with Weidner being the third. Cooper served in that capacity since 2014 before stepping down, which followed Greg Feris’ tenure that began in 1990.

Weider earned his bachelor’s degree from Springfield College, his Master of Arts in physical education in 1984 from Stanford and previous served as an assistant football coach at Murray State. He began his current career path in 1988 as the assistant athletics director at SMU.
