The St. John's Lutheran School track and field team qualified four student-athletes for the Lutheran Schools State Championships recently, and all four of them placed in the state finals.

Eighth-grader Mckenzie Derusha won the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 1:06.27, while sixth-grader Gloria Stark took second in the 100 dash with a time of 15.14 and third in the 200 dash with a personal-best 31.81.

Eighth-grader Lena Smazenka took third in the shot put, breaking the previous school record twice with throws of 31 feet, 4 inches and 32 feet, 8 inches, while seventh-grader Kelly Derusha finished fifth in the mile run with a personal-best time of 6:46.44.

"I am proud of how well (our athletes) did, especially in the extreme heat and humidity we had that day," said St. John's coach Brad Massey. "I am proud of how all our athletes represented our school throughout the entire track season."
