"Quality win:" Foran girls basketball coach pleased with victory

Foran girls’ basketball coach Bob Asmussen said he was proud of his team after the Lions defeated Career 51-45 on Saturday.

“Our team is very young and to get a quality win in the SCC is important to build upon in the development of our program.,” Asmussen said. “I’m proud of my girls in picking up the victory. Our scoring was evenly distributed with three girls in double figures.”

Lauren Heenan scored 12 points, including two 3-pointers, Courtney Musante had 11 and Abby Sanwald 10.

Asmussen said: “Lauren is our senior captain. While Courtney and Abby are juniors. Courtney had a double-double as she also had 10 rebounds.”

Sophomore’s Samantha Young and Mia Loewenberg each scored 6 points.

It was Foran’s first win after two losses to open the season.

“I’m excited by the fact that we were up the whole game until a run early in the fourth by Career gave them a two-point lead,” Asmussen said. “We immediately settled down and took the lead right back and stayed in control for the rest of the game.”

Unbeaten Amity defeated Foran 52-30 to open the week. Skylar Burzynski scored 15 points and Jayne Whitman had 14 in the victory Foran was led by Musante with 10 points. Heenan scored 8 and Mary Rodriguez 5.

Asmussen plans to keep working with his players.

“We have a lot of work to do in our limited practice time,” he said. “But the girls’ attitudes and effort have been great this year and are committed to improving on a daily basis. As a coach that excites me to come to work each day in a year and season like this.”
