Pistorius neighbor: shooting accidental

PRETORIA, South Africa — Using witness accounts of a panicked nighttime phone call from Oscar Pistorius begging for help and his desperate pleas for Reeva Steenkamp to stay alive, the defense at his murder trial tried to reinforce its case Monday that the double-amputee Olympian fatally shot his girlfriend in a tragic error of judgment.

Johan Stander and his daughter Carice Viljoen, neighbors and friends of Pistorius, testified that they were at the runner's villa soon after the shooting on Feb. 14, 2013, and that Pistorius was praying, trying to help Steenkamp breathe and urging her to live.

College basketball: Oregon State has fired Craig Robinson after six seasons without making the NCAA Tournament. The brother-in-law of President Barack Obama, Robinson had a solid start in Corvallis, taking a program that had lost 21 straight Pac-12 games to an 18-win season in 2008-09. The Beavers' results under Robinson were uneven after that, 94-105 overall. ... The Big Ten and Big East will begin a series of eight games in the first week of the 2015-16 season in an event to be named for the late Dave Gavitt The games will take place the first Tuesday through Friday of the regular season and will be played at home sites, four from each conference.

Golf: Tiger Woods says his recovery from back surgery is going slowly and he's not sure when he'll be able to return to golf. In a blog post on his website Monday, Woods said he remains sore from the incision during the March 31 operation for a pinched nerve. The surgery forced him to miss the Masters for the first time. He has said he hopes to return this summer. Woods says he is hitting a few putts and chipping without having to rotate his back.
