Brown County pitcher Taryn Moorman helped save the day as the Tri-County All-Star Senior League softball team opened pool play in the Little League World Series with a 17-13 win over the West Region in an old-fashioned knock-down, drag-out slugfest Monday night in Lower Sussex, Delaware.

Tri-County scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but West scored four in the bottom half to take a 4-3 lead. Tri-County exploded for nine runs in the top of the second to go back on top, 12-4, but West rallied for five in the bottom half to cut Tri-County’s lead to 12-9.

After failing to score in the top of the third, Tri-County sent Moorman to the circle in relief.
After walking the first batter she faced, Moorman struck out the next batter. A single put runners at first and second with one out, but Moorman got out of the inning with a line drive to right field and a fly ball to center.

Tri-County went on to score three runs in the top of the fourth to increase its lead to 15-9.

Moorman battled through a tough fourth inning, giving up a walk and hitting a batter. Two errors in the inning helped the West Region score four unearned runs to cut the lead to two, at 15-13.

Moorman breezed through the fifth. After hitting the leadoff batter, she struck out the next two and got the last out on a ground ball to second.

Moorman gave up a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth but got the next two batters on a pair of infield grounders.
Tri-County scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to make it 17-13.

West’s leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh reached on an error, but Moorman retired the next three on a fly ball, a line drive and a pop fly in foul territory.

Moorman gave up four runs, all unearned, on five hits in five innings of work. She struck out four batters and walked three.

Tri-County finished the game with 18 hits. Grace Henry led Tri-County at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a grand slam and a double. She drove in four runs and scored four. Ava Wombles went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Makenna Winchell went 3-for-5 with a double and five RBIs, and Kylie Robinson, Kaitlyn Robinson and Liz Waymire had two hits apiece.

Tri-County will play the Southeast Region in the second round of pool play on Tuesday. First pitch is at 2 p.m. All games are televised on ESPN+.
